Identity Check

Have you ever been stopped and asked, “Can I see your ID?” It’s a moment that makes you pause and prove who are. In a world that keeps asking for proof of who you are, how do you verify your Christian identity?

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples. If you love one another.” John 13:35

When you travel, you shuffle through those long security lines. You finally reach the front, and the TSA agent lifts a hand and says, “Can I see your ID?” They’re checking for proof. They want confirmation that you are who you say you are.

As Christians, our identity is verified a different way. Christ said the world would recognize His children by our love (John 13:35). Not by our vocabulary. Not by our church membership. Not by our social media posts. Love is the evidence. Love is the badge. Love is the unmistakable mark of someone who belongs to Jesus.

But what is the love of Christ? It’s not soft or sentimental. It’s strong. It’s steady. It’s costly. It’s courageous. It’s patient when patience feels impossible. It’s kind when kindness feels undeserved. It’s the kind of love that moves toward people instead of away from them. It’s the love that forgives seventy times seven even when they’re not sorry. It’s the love that sees the broken and doesn’t flinch. It’s the love that gives, serves, and shows up. It’s the love that reflects the heart of the One who laid down His life for us (1 John 3:16).

This love is not theoretical. It’s lived. It’s practiced. It’s revealed in the quiet moments when no one is watching and in the loud moments when everyone is. It’s the Spirit of God shaping us into the likeness of Christ so that our identity isn’t just something we claim, it’s something people can see.

So here’s the question for today. If someone had to verify your Christian identity, would the love of Christ be visible in how you speak, how you respond, how you treat people, and how you carry yourself? Not perfection. Not performance. Just love that looks like Him.

Let that be the proof you carry everywhere you go.
